The Houghton County Board of Commissioners received an update on the discussion of the jail addition at their regular meeting Tuesday.
County officials met with various groups to discuss the design of the jail during a three day workshop earlier this month.
The addition would go behind the courthouse where the parking deck currently is, with two levels of cells.
There would be a mixture of double and single occupancy and several options for holding cells, with a total of 58 beds in the facility.
The work camp operation would also be returned to the jail.
The next step is to develop the plans and deliver a cost estimate to the county, expected to be completed in early spring.
A ballot proposal would appear on the November ballot for voters to approve.
Commissioner Scott Ala argued the county should be looking at a new jail and courthouse facility instead of an addition but did not receive any support from the other commissioners since voters have previously turned down a similar proposal.
