The Houghton County Board of Commissioners may seek to penalize one of their own.
Commissioner Scott Ala became the topic of discussion at Tuesday’s regular meeting when, for the second time in the last few months, Ala appeared by telephone.
In his previous phone appearance, Ala was allowed to participate in the meeting and vote but Board Chair Al Koskela said the law does not permit him to do so.
Koskela accused Ala of missing most of his assigned meetings, a point Ala denies.
Ala stated his recent absences have been due to an undisclosed personal matter.
After speaking previously with County Prosecutor Michael Makinen, Koskela pushed for penalties of $100 for each missed meeting.
No motion was made so the topic was tabled until the next meeting.
In other business, the Houghton County Transfer station will be open extended hours.
County Administrator Eric Forsberg said the station will be open until 6pm on Wednesdays, starting today.
This will give residents a little extra time to drop off items during the week without having to come on busier Saturdays.
Longtime serving Houghton County Board Commissioner Anton Pintar will not be seeking re-election this fall.
He made the announcement at the conclusion of Tuesday’s regular meeting.
Pintar serves as the commissioner for District 3, which includes Adams Township and the city of Hancock.
