Houghton Council to Address Seaplane Rezoning

The Houghton City Council will revisit a request to rezone a parcel of property on Canal Road to accommodate the Isle Royale seaplane business tonight.

The council was set to consider the zoning a month ago, but the attorney for seaplane operator Jon Rector submitted a lengthy memorandum addressing the issue just before the meeting. Councilors delayed the decision so they and the city attorney could have time to review it.

If approved, the property at 18260 Canal Road near the UPPCO building would be rezoned from single family residential to industrial. A condition would be included that would limit use only for the seaplane business.

The council will hold a public hearing as tonight’s meeting begins at 5:30.
