Houghton Council Salutes Retiring Lankton

Houghton City Council members wrapped up last night’s meeting – and this term – by saluting Rachel Lankton, who is retiring after 16 years on the board.

Mayor Robert Backon read a proclamation that also mentioned Lankton’s service on the Portage Lake District Library Board, the Planning Commission, the Zoning Board of Appeals, and the Carnegie Museum of the Keweenaw Board, along with her efforts to help build the current library, and purchase the old library for use as the Carnegie Museum…

“The Houghton City Council extends its deepest appreciation for all of councilor Lankton’s service to our community, and wishes her the best in the future.”

Lankton’s daughter, Laura Kloss, also saluted her mom…

“I hope that you know how much I have always admired how strongly you stand up for the causes that you believe in.”

Lankton, in turn, thanked former city manager Scott MacInnes, current manager Eric Waara, and fellow council members…

“I have to say it’s been an interesting, entertaining, educational, and usually enjoyable 16 years.”

Her departure means that at least one new member will join the council after next week’s election.
