Houghton Council, Planning Commission, to Discuss Potential City Center Sale

The Houghton City Council and the Planning Commission will hold a joint meeting tonight, to discuss the potential sale of the Houghton City Center and the relocation of the city offices and police department.

Midwest Loan Services has offered to purchase the building. The company is currently leasing space on the upper levels, but would like to expand, and take over the full building.

Several proposals have been bandied about for a new location for the city offices.

Officials feel the vacant former Kirkish building at the west edge of downtown doesn’t have enough parking.

One option being discussed would be to tear down the covered parking garage east of the current city center, and build a new building, with a parking ramp attached.

The joint meeting will begin at 5:30. The Planning Commission will then hold its regular monthly meeting.
