Houghton Considers Options For “Monumental” Redevelopment Project

The Houghton City Council will hear from three contractors about their visions for redeveloping the Houghton waterfront.

The area being looked at includes the parking deck structure between Huron Street and Quincy Street above Lakeshore Drive.

The city put out a request for proposals and City Manager Eric Waara said they received three that met the criteria.

The conditions were that the proposed redevelopment had to be compatible with the city’s character, preserve access to businesses on both Shelden Avenue and Lakeshore Drive, had to match or increase parking opportunities, and the project must fill a need in the community, such as from a target analysis, and create a lasting value for the area.

The three Statements of Qualifications were received from Julien Properties, Moyle Real Estate and Development, and the Veridea Group.

Waara said a committee has reviewed these proposals and that any of them would represent a “monumental step forward” for downtown Houghton.

The City Council will hear short presentations from the contractors at their regular meeting on August 14th.

The public will be able to review the statements on the city’s website.

Given the opportunity and the scope and breadth of what’s being presented, Waara said this project is important for the future of the city and will set the course for the next several decades.
