Houghton Considering Raising Fines For Violating Rental Housing Code

The city of Houghton is doing what they can to crack down on violators of the rental housing code.

The city has been inundated with complaints over the past several weeks as several rental licenses have been granted to homeowners in residential districts.

The city council is proposing increasing the fine for failing to comply with any provision of the Housing Code for Rental Property from $50 to $500.

Repeat offenders would face a $750 fine and after the 2nd offense, could lose their rental license.

A public hearing to discuss the proposal was set for October 11th.
