Fire hydrant flushing begins today in the city of Houghton.
Crews will work each weekday between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. through August 5, opening the valves on hydrants to make sure they work properly, and to clear sediment from the water lines.
When work is being done in your neighborhood, your tap water may be discolored. There is no health hazard associated with the discoloration, and running the cold water for a few seconds should clear it up. Laundry could be stained, so it’s best to check the water before doing the wash.
Water pressure may also drop a bit when a hydrant is opened nearby.
