Houghton residents may soon be getting another choice for television delivery.
The Houghton City Council granted a cable TV franchise to Baraga Telephone Company at its meeting Wednesday night.
A spokesman for Baraga Telephone told us yesterday that the company is not ready to release details about the service, or when it will be made available.
City officials said the terms of the franchise are the same as those of the franchise for Charter Spectrum.
At Wednesday’s meeting, the city also endorsed several applications for grant money to renovate downtown apartments.
The money would come from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, and would go to the owners of the buildings.
At least half of the renovated apartments must be leased to low or moderate income tenants for the first year.
Two of the buildings are in the 500 block of Shelden Avenue – one is the former Lode Theatre, the other is directly across the street. The state will provide $321,750 for that project. The third building is in the 300 block, and houses Downwind Sports on the main level. $280,000 will be provided for apartments on the lower level.
