Houghton Applying For Grants From The MDNR & DEQ

The Houghton City Council is giving the thumbs up to go ahead with an application for a Passport Grant from the Department of Natural Resources.

The application would be for $30,500 for a warming house for the West Houghton Ice Rink.

The city would match the funds if approved.

The council also gave the go ahead to apply for a grant from the Department of Environmental Quality for more recycling bins.

The bins will cost about $14,900, with the city of Houghton putting up $7,000 in matching funds and the rest paid for by the grant.

The city would purchase about 300 more rolling containers for residents and 10 more municipal containers to collect recyclables.

Residents would still need to pay $10 for a bin, so the cost to the city will only be $4,000.
