Host Churches Still Needed For Homeless Shelter

Winter is fast approaching and there is still a lot that needs to be done before the Hope House Homeless Shelter is ready to open.

Five churches are still needed to become Host Churches if the shelter is to open by November 1st.

Organizers say there is still time to sign up and get the training necessary.

Each church will need 1 or 2 people to take the lead responsibility to become Church Coordinators to help with the scheduling and operating of the shelter.

Hope House is located in one local church who hosts the shelter for a week from 6 PM to 6 AM before moving to the next host church.

Two community meetings will be held on Monday, September 25th at the First United Methodist Church in Hancock to help answer questions.

The meetings will be held from 1pm to 3pm and from 6pm to 8pm.

The fundraising campaign also continues for the shelter through their Go Fund Me page.

Here is the full press release from Hope House:

Labor Day weekend is the “End Of Summer” here in the Copper Country. We are all to aware that the “dark ominous clouds” in the sky will bring the winter snow and snows!
Hope House is taking these changing season’s seriously and are preparing for the Winter – to help our homeless neighbors.
We still need the help of 5 churches to become Host Churches for Hope House Homeless Shelter to be ready to open by November 1, 2017. There is still time to sign up and get the training necessary. Each church will need 1 or 2 people to take in the LEAD responsibility to become Church Coordinator(s) to help with the scheduling and operating the shelter. Hope House is located in one local church who hosts the shelter for a week from 6 PM to 6 AM before moving to the next host church.
Please mark you calendars for Monday, September 25 and attend one of the two Community Meetings hosted at the First United Methodist Church 401 Quincy Street in Hancock. At this meeting you will get all of your last questions answered. The first meeting will be from 1 PM to 3 PM and the second from 6 PM to 8 PM.
We will have a number of “Special Guests” attending these meetings who have the experience of operating their rotating shelters, to answer all of your questions.
Church Coordinators from the rotating shelters in Marquette, Escanaba and Iron Mountain will be here to share their experiences and answer your questions.
The Delta County Sheriff will also be present to share from his experience how the rotating shelters will be a benefit to the community and not a cause of more problems.
An analyst from the Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness will be here to explain the Homeless Numbers recorded by MCAH and used by MSHDA and HUD in determining funding assistance to homeless in our area. She will also explain how the shelters in the UP are serving THEIR community members and not a majority of people from outside of the UP.
Resource Managers from the Community Action Agency Alger Marquette will also explain why a homeless shelter in our area is needed to help provide shelter to the homeless, during the process period before or if they receive assistance.
This project has been needed for a long time, here in the Copper Country, and we are so close to seeing it become a reality. We invite the community to come to these meetings to get first-hand information on how Hope House will operate. Please share this information with others!
