Highway Construction Season Looms

With load limits in effect, construction season can’t be far off.

The Michigan Department of Transportation has laid out its projects for summer. Details are included in MDOT’s updated five-year plan.

Most of the work in our region will take place in Ontonagon County.
• M-26 will be resurfaced over 15 miles from Greenland Road to Twin Lakes Road.
• M-26 will be rebuilt over 5.5 miles from US-45 to the western junction with M-38.
• US-45 will be resurfaced over 6.6 miles from the Baltimore River to M-26.
• M-28 will be rebuilt from M-64 to Ewen.

In southern Houghton County, M-28 will be rebuilt over a 10-mile stretch from the Ontonagon County Line to Kitchie Road. Contractors will also finish up the US-41/College Avenue project in the city of Houghton.

In Baraga County, six miles of M-28 will be rebuilt from the Houghton/Baraga County Line to Johnson Road.

In Keweenaw County, work has already begun on replacing the Silver River bridge on M-26 between Copper Harbor and Eagle Harbor. Traffic is being regulated by an automated signal.
