High COVID Rate Threatens Winter Tourism

It’s not just individual health that’s at risk, as the COVID-19 rate in the western Upper Peninsula continues to climb.

While rates were low a few months ago, Mainstreet Calumet director Leah Polzien was happy to see brisk summer tourism business…

“We did have lower numbers this summer with the pandemic count, and people were looking at our area as a great place to escape to.”

Now that our infection rates are the highest in the state, she fears potential visitors may not be so eager to take advantage of our winter opportunities…

“It’s important to folks that we do get our numbers down if we want to see tourism rebounding, because all of us rely on tourism.”

Polzien was a guest on Sunday’s Copper Country Today program. You can hear the show at KeweenawReport.com, or on most major podcast platforms.
