In the coming year, Finland will celebrate its centennial, and what better way to celebrate with them than to speak the language of our forefathers? That’s why Finlandia University’s Finnish American Heritage Center (FAHC) is offering a pair of Finnish classes to provide folks with an opportunity to learn the basics of the language, or to brush up on their existing skills.
Beginning Tuesday, September 27 at 6 p.m., Finnish American Reporter intern Johannes Waris, of Helsinki, will lead a Finnish I course. The class will meet for eight consecutive weeks, for about one hour each Tuesday. The class is appropriate for people with no language experience at all, or those with minimal background in Finnish.
On Wednesdays, beginning September 28 at 11 a.m., Finland native and Copper Country resident Anna Leppanen will instruct the Finnish II course. Designed for people with some skill in the language, this class will enable participants to expand their vocabulary and work toward conversational skills. This course will also be eight consecutive weeks, meeting for about an hour each session.
The enrollment fee for either class is $40 per student. Advance registration is encouraged, and can be done by calling (906) 487-7549. All classes will take place at the Finnish American Heritage Center; instructional materials will be provided.
