Heldt Honored with MTU Distinguished Service Award

Michigan Tech’s 2022 Faculty Distinguished Service Award has been given to Caryn Heldt.

Heldt holds the James and Lorna Mack Endowed Chair of Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering in Michigan Tech’s Department of Chemical Engineering, and is also the director of Tech’s Health Research Institute.

She was honored for leading the effort to establish Michigan Tech’s COVID-19 diagnostic testing lab, which became the first certified to handle human samples in the Upper Peninsula. The creation of the lab allowed students to return to campus in the fall of 2020.

Tech Vice President for Research Dave Reed nominated Heldt for the award. He acknowledged that many people worked on the project, but noted that Heldt “was far above and beyond anyone else in her leadership.”
