The Houghton Energy Efficiency Team is expressing their frustration with Georgetown University in a letter calling on the school to honor its obligations.
Houghton County was among the communities competing to be a finalist for the $5 million prize in the Georgetown Energy Prize Competition.
Just as the finalists were to be announced, the prize was changed from a cash award to simply consultation for $5 million in financing for an energy saving project.
Georgetown required all finalists to waive any claim to the cash prize and to release the university from any responsibility after the winner begins working with the third party financial consultant.
HEET has sent a letter to Georgetown University calling the change in prizes a “bait and switch” and demanding that the original terms of the competition be honored.
Houghton County was one of 50 small communities to compete for the prize over a two year period, which produced significant reductions in local energy usage.
