Heavy Rains Wipe Out Road Repairs

Back to square one–that’s how local officials are describing the effect of this week’s rains on certain areas that were under repair from the June 17th flood.

Two to four inches of rain fell Tuesday night into Wednesday, causing flooding in several areas in Houghton County.

Canal Road, M-26 in Hubbell and Lake Linden, US-41 near Chassell, and M-203 north of Hancock were areas affected most by the rain.

A flood warning was issued for the Sturgeon River area near Alston by National Weather Service until tomorrow afternoon.

Houghton City Manager Eric Waara said the city of Houghton weathered the storm comparatively well.

Waara said Public Works had been monitoring the drainage system and everything was working the way it was supposed to.

The rain has caused delays to some of the repair work such as Dodge Street but Waara is hopeful they will be able to complete the temporary fix of the lower portion of that road before winter.
