The City of Hancock will purchase Quincy Green from Finlandia University.
The city council voted last night to approve the purchase agreement, at a price of $150,000.
The purchase includes the green space, sandstone wall, stairs and adjacent sidewalk in front of the old Hancock Central High School, now owned by Finlandia University, and known as Hirvonen Hall.
The university will have the right to use the area for activities at no cost, as long as they don’t conflict with regularly-scheduled city events.
The roster of Hancock’s fire department has increased to 22, with five new members having been added.
The city accepted a $9,000 grant from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy to support a tire recycling event. Officials hope to schedule the event in May. City residents will be able to turn in old tires, with a maximum of 10 per household.
Plans are underway for next summer’s Key Ingredients event. The evening of music and food in downtown Hancock will be held July 14th, the night before the Canal Run.
The council again delayed discussion about returning to a once per month meeting schedule. Councilor Ron Blau was absent, and other councilors want to have the discussion with all members present.
