Hancock Teen Earns Eagle Scout Award

A young Hancock man is celebrating his achievements after being named Houghton County’s newest Eagle Scout.

18 year old Korey Ericson was joined by friends, family and fellow parishioners Sunday who all gathered for the ceremony at Zion Lutheran Church in Hancock.

“Only a small percentage of all scouts earn the Eagle Scout award, so it’s really, really important and really, really good. This is our first Eagle Scout ceremony in four years,” said Scoutmaster Jim Guzek, referring to the accomplishment of Korey Ericson from local troop 207, who has stayed with his ambitious desire to “do his best to fulfill his duty to God, country, other people and self” and that ambition has earned him his status as an Eagle Scout.

Korey’s father, Kevin, expresses his pride.  “Korey has put a lot of tradition, a lot of family involved with his Eagle project. We’re very proud of Korey. He’s a good boy.”

As part of yesterday’s ceremony fellow scouts and scout masters honored him as they highlighted some of his achievements and also commended him for being an outstanding citizen and a good role model.

He was also presented with an award of recognition from the Michigan Senate, signed by Governor Rick Snyder.

The new Eagle Scout describes his determination that led to the ceremony.  “If you want to do something don’t stop. Just keep going and make it to the finish line. Never give up,” Korey said.

Korey is the first member of Troop 207 to make Eagle Scout in four years, and says he’s on his way to becoming a scoutmaster.
