Hancock School District Updates Parents and Students

In an email sent to families of students in the Hancock School District, Superintendent Steve Patchin, had a few updates.

He started off by stating the Michigan Department of Education will be applying for close to $390 million from the Federal Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund, made possible by the CARE ACT.

The funds, if secured, could be used for education technology, planning and implementing new activities for Summer learning and after school activities for families who depend on the school district.

Patchin also reminded parents and students in middle and high school, minus seniors, that 60% of coursework must be completed, to earn a “Pass.”

Failure to do so, will earn the student an “Incomplete” however, the student can catch up over the Summer or during the beginning of school next year.

He also asked parents to continue giving feedback, so improvements to the distance learning curriculum can be adjusted.

Activity packets can be dropped off at the book return at the District Library at the high school or the dropbox outside Barkell Elementary.

If you’re a middle or high school student and haven’t yet picked up the belongings from your locker, you can still do so at the packet pickup on Wednesday from 10a-1pm.

Barkell Elementary students can call the office to arrange a pickup.

The district also thanked the following businesses for their donations during the shutdown.

U-Haul for rolls of plastic bags for their distributions, Pat’s Foods for providing paper bags for elementary packet pickup. Michigan Tech’s Mt. Ripley for providing Easter Candy that was given out during the Easter week packet pick up, Domino’s Pizza for providing fresh pizza as part of the food pick up this past week and 31 Backpacks, for providing toiletries, laundry detergent and toilet paper, for families during the last food pick up.

In another email to elementary student families, the Keweenaw Family Resource Center also has diapers and wipes for families going through financial hardship, through their Baby Closet.

Families in Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw and Ontonagon Counties are eligible.

The Keweenaw Family Resource Center would like to thank the Portage Health Foundation, for their support.
