Hancock School District Updates

In an email sent to parents late Friday, Hancock School Superintendent Steve Patchin gave updates on the district.

Hancock, along with Houghton school districts, are closing in on one hundred thousand meals served, since schools were closed in mid-March.

The meal program will run through June 30th, although the district has applied for funding, to ensure the program runs through the Summer.

Dr. Patchin also thanked Laurel Maki and 31 Backpacks, for their support over the last few weeks.

Parents who don’t participate in the Free and Reduced Hot Lunch Program are encouraged to apply, because the more families that are signed up, allows the district more access to funding to help other families in the district.

The Portage Health Foundation was also thanked, for awarding a grant to Barkell Elementary, for their school garden.

Also included in the email were plans for 2020’s High School Graduation.

So far, the ceremony is scheduled for May 30th, but that is subject to change, based on the “Stay Home Stay Safe” Executive Order.

If the order happens to be extended beyond May 28th, the ceremony would take place on June 13th or June 27th if another extension happens.

It was also noted that High School Yearbooks are available by pre-order until May 21st.

If you order after May 21st, you’ll be responsible for shipping costs.

Hardcover yearbooks are $36 and softcover yearbooks are $28.

A link to pre order is here.

The district has also sent a request to the federal government asking that CARES ACT funding be used for basic operating costs, as the district stands to lose between $345 to $1,000 per student, due to budget conflicts, brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
