The Hancock Public School District is holding a special meeting tomorrow, February 25th, to conduct a public hearing regarding the District’s request for a Labor Day Waiver.
The waiver, if granted, would allow the district to begin the school year before Labor Day.
Currently, state law dictates districts, begin the school year after Labor Day.
The request asks the district be allowed to begin the 2021-2023 school years before Labor Day, for a number of reasons, including ensuring the school year does not go into the second week in June, and accommodating student athletics and students who are enrolled in early college programs.
Proponents of the law are asking what is the purpose of the law, when waivers, are almost always granted, when school districts ask for them.
Since 2014, the number of districts granted waivers has tripled statewide.
The meeting starts at 4:30pm in the District Boardroom of the middle school.
