Hancock School Board Names New Member

The Hancock School Board gained a member last night.

Trustees appointed Steve Koskela to fill the seat left vacant after Charles Paoli resigned last month.

Board members welcomed new middle school principal Jesse Kentala, who said he’s been warmly received…

“I’m very impressed with the leadership team so far, and, of course, it’s not a surprise, but we’ve got awesome, awesome students.”

The board formally approved Kentala’s contract last night, and approved the resignation of his predecessor, Steve Aho. Trustees also accepted the resignation of high school phys ed teacher David Wesa. High school principal Chris Salani is sorry to see him go…

“His attitude and his grace and ability with our students has been wonderful, and I think I can speak for just about every one of us, saying we’re going to miss him a great deal.”

Superintendent Steve Patchin outlined plans for use of the money collected from the school’s sinking fund millage, starting with repairing failing concrete at the entrances of the high school and elementary school. That project will also be used to help raise additional money…

“You’re going to be able to get pavers with your name on them, and that will be fundraising for improvements inside the school.”

Interior projects are also planned…

“Inside the high school, the improvements will be in the commons area, getting some high tables, meeting tables, chairs, some more electricity for pugging in electronic equipment. And, inside the elementary school, teachers are interested in creating a STEM lab.”

The Hancock board also approved the hiring of Ramon Sague as interim head boys varsity basketball coach. John Sebbas was named assistant coach, and Jesse Chynoweth will serve as a volunteer assistant.
