Hancock Police Officers Receive Life Saving Award

A Hancock woman is alive thanks to a pair of officers from the Hancock Police Department.

Sergeant Wayne Ohtonen and Officer Ryan LaBerge were recognized by the Hancock City Council at their regular meeting Wednesday with a Life Saving Award.

Mayor Lisa McKenzie read from the plaques presented to the officers, who on June 5th provided medical treatment to a woman on Pine Street in Hancock, who was in cardiac arrest at the time.

Police Chief Wayne Butler said the quick response and attention to detail by Ohtonen and LaBerge helped saved the woman’s life until an ambulance could arrive.

Butler also thanked the Houghton Police Department and the Michigan State Police for their assistance at the scene.

The woman they saved, Karen, was in attendance as well and thanked the officers, saying she wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for them.

Also honored at the meeting was Stephen Smith with an Outstanding Service Award for promoting placemaking, supporting the arts and community development efforts as well as founding and organizing the Key Ingredients events in downtown Hancock.
