Hancock Memorial Park To Be Restored

There is a park dedicated to Hancock residents who have lost their lives in service to their country directly across from city hall.

Because of the heavy growth of trees and other greenery, the wall of names at Memorial Park is easy to miss though it was built to streamline nicely with city hall and would have a sight line down through the Lions Park on Montezuma Avenue to the canal.

Hancock Recreation Commission’s Deb Mann proposed an overhaul to the park to restore it to a place that is worthy of those memorialized there.

She said it would start with a clearing of most of the trees and their stumps, leaving the large tree used during the Hancock Christmas season.

The defunct fountain in the center of the park, which hasn’t worked for years, would be removed.

The newly renovated park would have five pillars, each with a 15-inch bronze medallion in honor of the different branches of service—Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and the Coast Guard.

The JROTC will begin clearing the park this fall with additional work expected to be carried out next year.

The Hancock City Council gave Mann the go ahead on the project and so fundraising efforts can also begin.
