Hancock Mayor Paul LaBine will step down from his position, and become Houghton County’s new Prosecuting Attorney.
A release from the City of Hancock indicated that LaBine will tender his resignation at Wednesday’s city council meeting.
State law prohibits him from holding both positions simultaneously.
LaBine will succeed Brittany Bulliet as the Houghton County Prosecutor. Bulleit recently was appointed to replace former 12th Circuit Court Judge Charles goodman, following his retirement.
LaBine’s appointment will run until noon on January 1, 2025. If he wishes to continue in office past that time, he will need to stand for election in November, 2024. His anticipated swearing-in date as prosecutor will be July 24.
He joined to the Hancock City Council in late 2016, and has served as mayor for 4 years.
LaBine holds bachelors and masters degrees in mathematics, and earned a JD from the UIC Chicago School of Law. He has juggled dual careers as an attorney and as a mathematics instructor for Gogebic Community College.
In the city’s release, LaBine stated “It is very bittersweet for me to be leaving the Hancock City Council and I am proud of everything the Council, City staff, and community members have accomplished. However, I am honored and privileged to be offered this opportunity to continue to serve the community as Houghton County Prosecutor. I will do my absolute best to execute all duties of the position fairly and ethically.”
