Hancock City Council Meets

The Hancock City Council held their monthly meeting last night.

The council approved the amended contract for Portage Township to connect with the city of Houghton as part of the Portage Lake Water and Sewer Authority.

Chris Holmes from the PLWSA,  gave a presentation on the proposed area to be added.

The 2020 Census was also discussed, along with the need to make sure residents take part, as federal funding relies heavily on an area’s population.

It was mentioned that data from the 2010 Census, revealed that Hancock and the surrounding areas, were underfunded by approximately 20%.

It was recommended that students, residents who spend Winters elsewhere and families with small children, all properly fill out their Census card which will come in the mail.

You can also take part online, and over the phone.

A grant was approved for an absentee ballot counter, and should be ready for elections in August.

The council also approved the appointments of Jordan Johnson and Pete Mackin to the Downtown Development Authority to terms expiring in 2024.

Members of the Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity were on hand, and received congratulations for winning this year’s Winter Carnival Statue Contest.

It was estimated that members put over 3,000 hours into the winning effort.

Mayor Paul Labine was nominated for two Spark Plug Awards, and Mayor Pro-Tem Will Lytle, recently sat on a panel at the Michigan Municipal Leagues Climate Policy Forum, and was told the state, should follow Hancock’s lead, in terms of climate change mitigation and adaptation.
