Hancock Approves Salt Barn, Police Handgun Replacement – City Council Wrap

A potential change to the Hancock city council’s meeting schedule was put off again last night.

Council members are considering a proposal to reduce their schedule from two meetings per month to one. They have also gone on record as saying they believe the full council should be present when the decision is made.

Council member Lisa McKenzie was absent last night, so the debate was postponed.

Hancock’s police officers will soon get new weapons. At its meeting last evening, the city council approved the purchase of 12 new 9mm handguns from Freeman Guns in Hancock. Councilor Rick Freeman, who owns the business, abstained from the vote. The department’s existing handguns will be traded in to help alleviate the cost.

A new officer is joining the Hancock force. Chief Tami Sleeman told the council that Jacob McGinnis comes to the Copper Country from Missouri.

A joint council meeting of the council, downtown development authority, and planning commission has been set for March 1st at the Houghton County Arena. The three groups will discuss the city’s master plan.

The Hancock council approved a $1 million contract to build a new road salt storage barn. The existing lean-to is undersized and in disrepair. The Michigan Department of Transportation, which actually uses 80 percent of the salt stored in the barn, will cover 80 percent of the construction cost.

Council members also authorized OHM Advisors to begin the design process for replacing the 30-year-old roof on the Department of Public Works garage.
