Hancock Approves Grant Application for Technology Park

The City of Hancock has taken a big step toward development of its new business and technology park.

At a special meeting last night, the council approved the application for a grant that would cover much of the initial investment.

The city will need to provide $666,028 in matching funds to start the project. That’s far less than would normally be required. The usual 50 percent match has been reduced by more than half as part of a Father’s Day Flood recovery program.

Council member John Haeussler said that makes the opportunity too good to pass up…

“As a representative of the members of this community, I’m willing to take this level of risk with this amount of money.”

Officials hope much of the matching money will come from other grants. Some already has, in the form of a $75,000 Michigan Economic Development Corporation grant announced yesterday.

Both Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance Director Jeff Ratcliffe and Hancock City Manager Mary Babcock said there has been an increase in companies interested in investing in the Keweenaw.
