Gunshot Death Closes NICE Schools

NICE Community Schools will be closed today, following a tragedy yesterday at the Aspen Ridge Middle School.

Around 12:30, a gunshot was reported. The school was immediately locked down. A Michigan State Police trooper who was already at the school giving presentations to students discovered that a young male student had shot himself inside a bathroom. The victim was taken to UP Health System-Marquette, but later died from the injury.

The school remained on lockdown, until additional troopers determined that the incident was isolated. Students were sent home at 2:00. Officials report there was no threat to other students or the public. An investigation continues. The name of the young man will not be released.

Grief counselors will be available for students this morning.
