The Barbara Kettle Gundlach Shelter is celebrating its 40th anniversary by moving into a new facility.
Director Mary Niemela says the new building is not far from the existing shelter. It will offer a number of advantages… [NIEMELA A].
The new shelter does need to be renovated. Exterior changes are minimal, but three bedrooms must be built, and some windows replaced to meet egress requirements.
A fundraiser is underway, with a goal of $15,000. With a donation of $40, you’ll become eligible to win a flight over the Keweenaw Peninsula with photographer and pilot Neil Harri. A $100 donation will get you three chances to win. Contributions must be made by October 9th to qualify. Get full details about the Build A Bedroom Campaign at their website.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Gundlach Shelter’s seventh annual Ride Against Abuse Community Awareness Event will begin Monday at 6:00 at the Calumet AmericInn.
The event will start with a ceremony to remember victims and celebrate survivors. Participants will ride motorcycles from Calumet along M-26 through Lake Linden to Hancock and Houghton to create an awareness of domestic violence. The ride will end at the parking lot at Ray Kestner Waterfront Park in Houghton.
Those not riding are invited to line the streets to show support for those that are riding against abuse.
