Michigan Tech students, faculty, and members of the community are invited to take part in a monthly environmental movie night.
The presentation is part of the Greenfilm series, that is now in its seventh year and will be followed by a group discussion.
“This is a program where we offer one film per month and we invite the community and the topics are wide and varying,” said Joan Chadde of Michigan Tech’s Science and Engineering Department, who will be showing the film at MTU’s Forestry building.
The name of this month’s featured film is “Freightened” and it explores the impact of the shipping industry.
As America began transforming itself from a country that produces the goods it consumes to one that imports 90 percent of them, cargo ships have been needed to bring those products back to the states and on the shelves of our stores.
The documentary investigates some of the effects left behind from the global industry.
Chadde said, “The films are from 7:00 to typically 8:30. We try to show one hour films and have a half hour discussion.”
Light refreshments are provided, and following the film will be a group discussion with members of Michigan Tech’s Environmental and Transportation Departments.
Chadde said, “And our discussion facilitator will be Dr. Pasi Lautala who is director of the transportation program here at Michigan Tech.”
