Keeping Great Lakes water levels under control isn’t as easy as it seems.
Rising water levels in the Great Lakes are a growing concern for shoreline communities.
Millions of dollars worth of damage has affected roadways, residential homes and other infrastructure.
Things have gotten so bad that Marquette County recently approved a request asking that Michigan Shorelines be declared a disaster area, so areas affected can begin receiving federal funding, to begin repairs, and combat the continuing threat of rising water levels.
Lauren Frye, Michigan Tech grad from the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, Detroit District Office, said due to increased rainfall, coupled with more snow than usual, we are experiencing the wettest 5 year period, since we started keeping records.
Fry said while various agencies try to keep the water levels under control, it’s ultimately not up to them.
If predicted models come true, the Great Lakes are on track to break 120 year old records for water levels.
