Great Lakes Ice Cover Lags Behind

Ice cover is developing slowly on Lake Superior this winter.

The latest map issued yesterday by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shows just four percent of the lake surface frozen – mostly in shallow areas near Duluth, Ashland, and Thunder Bay. That’s just a third of the amount of coverage we usually have this time of year.

The other Great Lakes are also lagging behind.
