Great Lakes Funding Facing Massive Cut Again

Funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative is once again on the chopping block in the latest budget proposal by the Trump Administration.

Nearly all of the funding for the program to continue cleanup efforts of the Great Lakes and to combat invasive species would be eliminated.

Democrat Senator Debbie Stabenow said in a statement that, despite strong bipartisan support in Congress for this program, President Trump’s budget only calls for $30 million in funding.

Michigan projects have received more than $600 million in funding from this program since its establishment.

Congressman Jack Bergman, the Republican representing Michigan’s 1st District, called the proposed budget request the first step in passing a balanced budget for Fiscal Year 2019.

Bergman said he will continue to fight to protect the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, Essential Air Service, and other important government services, while focusing on border security, defense, and infrastructure.
