The final significant winter event in the Copper Country has fallen victim to the “winter that wasn’t.”
Organizers of the Great Bear Chase announced this afternoon that the event has been called off. It was scheduled for March 9th at the Swedetown Trails.
Organizers cited predicted warm temperatures this weekend, and uncertainty over snow conditions. While there is some snow on the course, the base is much lower than normal, and there was concern that trail conditions would not be safe.
Racers will be given the opportunity to transfer their registration to next year or donate their 2024 race entry to the Swedetown Trails Club, which is a 501(c)(3) organization.
Organizers are encouraging racers to travel to the Keweenaw either the week of March 9th or sometime throughout the year. Next year’s event is scheduled for March 8, 2025.
