Michigan Tech’s Graduate Student Government (GSG) is joining in a nationwide walkout Wednesday to support higher education and show how vital graduate students are to society.
GSG President Hossein Tavakoli says the proposed federal tax plan includes a giant tax hike on graduate students. Graduate students across the country fear the tax bill will double or even triple many student’s taxes, discouraging current and future students from continuing their education at the graduate level.
Graduate students will gather at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Husky statue on campus. Tavakoli says there will be a few speeches included remarks from University President Glenn Mroz. He says Vice President for Student Affairs and Advancement Les Cook, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Jacqueline Huntoon and Associate Provost and Dean of the Graduate School Pushpalatha Murthy are expected to be in attendance as well.
Following the speeches, the group plans to walk across campus to Alumni House and loop back to the statue.
