The announcement and executive order, came at the recommendation of the state’s Coronavirus Task Force on Racial Disparities, which Whitmer created in response to the disproportionate impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on communities of color.
The black community in Michigan makes up 14% of the population, but has had 40% of the state’s deaths from COVID-19.
To date, Michigan has 67,683 confirmed cases, with 6,024 deaths.
Whitmer said her team, including herself, will undergo Implicit Bias Training, every year.
