Gogebic Community College Narrows Down List Of Presidential Candidates

The search for the next president of Gogebic Community College is down to the final four candidates.  The search committee narrowed the short list down from ten candidates last week.  The college plans to announce the next President by the end of February.

Gerald (Jay) Edgren, Ph.D., is President of Frontier Community College in Fairfield, IL. He previously served as Director of Education at Sanford Brown College in Seattle, WA. Dr. Edgren earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Leadership Studies from Marian University in Fond du Lac, WI; a Master of Science in Mathematics from Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI; and Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education – Mathematics and Science from Northland International University in Dunbar, WI.

George McNulty, Ph.D., is Vice President of Student Affairs at Colby Community College in Colby, KS. Previously, he served as Interim Director of Financial Assistance at Western Nevada College in NV. Dr. McNulty earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Leadership and a Master of Arts in Counseling and Educational Psychology from the University of Nevada, Reno, in Reno, NV; a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education from California State University, Chico, in Chico, CA; and Associate of Science and Associate of Arts from Feather River College in Quincy, CA.

Richard Sax, Ph.D., is Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at University of Rio Grande & Rio Grande Community College in Rio Grande, OH. He previously served as Campus Dean and Chief Academic Officer at the University of New Mexico – Valencia Campus, in Los Lunas, NM. Dr. Sax earned a Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Arts in English Language and Literature from The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI; and a Bachelor of Arts in English with a concentration in American Studies from Haverford College in Haverford, PA.

Stacy Young, Ph.D., is Dean, School of Business and School of Advanced Technology at Southwestern Michigan College in Dowagiac, MI. She previously served as Dean, Niles Campus at Southwestern Michigan College in Dowagiac, MI. Dr. Young earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Leadership at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, MI; a Master of Arts in Business Administration from Bethel College in Mishawaka, IN; and a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Manchester University in North Manchester, IN.

The Presidential finalists will interview with the full Board of Trustees in early February along with participating in open forums. (See Schedule Below) The College welcomes the general public, faculty, staff, administration and students to attend any of the open forums. There will be a brief introduction of each candidate, followed by a question and answer session. Feedback forms will be provided to all attendees, and the completed forms will be collected at the end of each session and given to the Board of Trustees for review. The college plans to announce the next President by the end of February.

The public open forums will be held February 5 – 8 from 10:30 – 11:30 and 2:30 – 3:30 pm.  The student forums will be held from 1:15 – 2:15. All forums will be held in the upper level of the Lindquist Student and Conference Center on the main campus in Ironwood or room 200 at the Copper Country Center in Houghton.

Tuesday, February 5, 2019 – Dr. George McNulty

Wednesday, February 6, 2019 – Dr. Richard Sax

Thursday, February 7, 2019 – Dr. Stacy Young

Friday, February 8, 2019 – Dr. Gerald (Jay) Edgren

GCC was assisted with the presidential search process by The Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT). ACCT’s assistance included recruiting highly competitive candidates, working with the Search Committee, and supporting the Board of Trustees. “The appointment of GCC’s next president will shape GCC’s future for years to come and the Board is fully committed to conducting an equitable, inclusive, and transparent national search,” said Ashley Paquette, GCC Director of Human Resources. ACCT has conducted over 500 community college searches and brought a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the process.
