Girls Introduced to “Manly” Trades

Can a woman repair your car? Weld metal? Build a house?

Of course… but few do.

The Copper Country Intermediate School District took a step toward changing that yesterday, with its annual Nontraditional Day.

Girls from high schools around the area gathered at the Career and Technical Education Center for hands-on introductions to the fields of automotive repair, welding, construction, and engineering.

CCISD superintendent George Stockero hopes some will be interested…

Baraga High School sophomore Lynn Lauritsen liked welding…

Lauritsen admitted, though, that she’s still inclined to pursue a career in veterinary medicine.

The growing CCISD Career and Technical Education program now has 325 students enrolled in a variety of classes, ranging from construction to culinary to computers to health careers.
