Girl UP Holding Art Competition To Help Girls Worldwide

“Repainting the World” is the theme of an art competition presented by a local youth-led organization helping to make the world a better place for young women.

President of the Houghton-Keweenaw Chapter of Girl UP Ganna Omar says art is one of the best ways to express yourself and how you feel about issues in the world.

Omar said, “So it was an idea to kind of get everyone in the community together and re-imagine what their dream world would look like and express that through art and, in the process, collect funds that would go to the youth that are facing the harsh circumstances and realities of what the world is like now.”

Girl Up is a sister organization of the United Nations Foundation.

Omar said, “It focuses on the United Nations’ global goal of targeting gender inequality, but more than anything, for local youth it sort of puts American girls as being like leaders as a force for change to stand up and be a voice for other girls around the world who probably don’t have the same privileges we do.”

Entries can be submitted to the Copper Country Community Arts Center in Hancock for a $5 fee. The deadline to submit is October 6th. Prizes will be awarded by category, such as age group and type of art.

The details to the competition are below:
Local youth-led organization Houghton Keweenaw Girl Up is excited to announce that they are hosting a local art competition with the theme of “Repainting the World”.
Girl Up is a sister organization of the United Nations Foundation that focuses on empowering American girls to reach out and help the hardest to reach girls around the world, who have yet to gain access to basic human rights, such as the right to go to school, the right to proficient healthcare, and the right to general safety from violence. Through raising awareness, advocacy, and fundraising, Girl Up strives to create a better world where every child, regardless of gender, gets a chance to succeed.
The theme for the art contest, “Repainting the World”, stems from their core message as an organization. “It is our genuine belief that youth are not just the leaders of tomorrow, they are in fact the leaders and change makers of today.”
People from any and all ages can submit pieces to the Copper Country Community Art Center at 126 E Quincy St, Hancock. Submission fees are a flat five dollars for all ages (all funds will be donated to the United Nations Foundation for the benefit of adolescent youth around the world), and the submission deadline is Friday, October 6th 2017. Local art teachers and artists will be judging the pieces the following day. Prizes will be awarded.
Please note that categories will be set up according to age group and type of art.
If you submit a piece into the competition: Work must be picked up between 10am-6pm on October 10th or 11th from the Art Center.  Work that is not picked up during that time will then be picked up by GirlUp and participants must contact the organization if they would like to retrieve their work.
