Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist II spent the weekend in the Copper Country, talking with small business owners about the challenges they’re facing.
In L’Anse yesterday, Gilchrist stopped at the iconic Hilltop Restaurant. While the Hilltop’s bakery remains open, the dining room has been closed for months, because owners can’t recruit enough staff members to operate it. Gilchrist said he hopes the state’s ongoing investment in child care will enable some mothers to return to the workforce…
At nearby L’Anse Manufacturing, owner Mark Massicotte echoed the need for workers who are not just available, but appropriately trained and motivated…
Massicotte added that nobody’s plans for business expansion can be fully realized if there aren’t enough employees to fill the need.
L’Anse Manufacturing produces high-level machined parts for commercial manufacturing, and for the military.
