GCC Ends Management of Porkies Ski Hill

Gogebic Community College is ending its partnership with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to operate the winter sports complex at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park.

GCC took over the facilities in 2012, with the goal of rebuilding the operation. College President George McNulty notified the state two years ago that they believed that goal had been accomplished. The DNR requested that GCC stay another two seasons, and began the transition by awarding some of the concessions operations to a private company.

That policy will continue, while DNR staff takes over the maintenance and management of the ski hill itself.

The Friends of the Porkies support group will work with the DNR to stage special events at the hill, including the Porcupine Mountains Music Festival in August.
