Gasoline prices continue to ease back.
AAA Michigan’s statewide average cost for a gallon of regular unleaded yesterday was $4.05. That’s 15 cents less than a week ago, but 16 cents higher than a month ago, and 76 cents higher than a year ago.
On the Keweenaw Peninsula, prices were well above the state average, with Houghton County at $4.22, and Keweenaw County at $4.20. Ontonagon County, though, was just below the state average at $4.02, and Baraga County was well below at $3.74.
Gas prices spiked several weeks ago when OPEC announced cuts in production. Experts say, though, that modest demand has caused crude oil prices to drop since then, with a corresponding reduction in gasoline prices.
Prices in the Midwest remain well above the national average of $3.79, because the BP Husky refinery in Toledo remains offline. Repairs after a recent fire at the facility could keep it idle until early next year.
