As we head into the weekend, gasoline prices continue to climb.
AAA Michigan reports that the statewide average price of a gallon of unleaded gas is $4.33.
That’s 10 cents higher than it was on Wednesday, 17 cents higher than a week ago, and 51 cents higher than a month ago.
The Copper Country was slightly below that, with the average price at $4.29 in Houghton and Keweenaw Counties, $4.31 in Ontonagon County, and $4.18 in Baraga County.
Industry experts blame several factors, including the recent fire at a BP refinery in Ohio, which could keep that facility offline for months. Many employees and contractors there have been laid off. World oil supply has been tightened by sanctions against Russia for its war against Ukraine. Some production in the Gulf of Mexico was suspended last week because of Hurricane Ian.
