Future of Houghton County Transfer Station Could Be Resolved Soon

The fate of the Houghton County Waste Transfer Station could be decided soon.

At last night’s Houghton County Board meeting, Commissioner Tom Tikkanen said a legal review of the current contract for landfill use by the facility is nearly complete…

“As soon as we have that back, we will finalize a request for proposal, whether it be for an outright sale, or if it’s better advised to request proposals for leasing the facility.”

One of the goals is to offer more recycling options at the Atlantic Mine transfer station, which a private contractor might be able to provide.

Tikkanen said the Solid Waste Committee will meet November 24th, and hopes to bring a recommendation to the County Board at its December meeting.

The fate of the county’s former transfer facility on Sharon Avenue also came up at last night’s meeting. New administrator Ben Larson visited the site recently…

“I was alarmed by it. The building, as it stands now, is in pretty tough shape.”

Larson said the structure is poorly secured. Commissioners Tikkanen and Gretchen Janssen, who are both real estate brokers, agreed to review the site, and see what it might be worth if the county were to decide to sell it.
