Officials looking to restore an historic building in Calumet are asking for financial donations.
Volunteers have already invested hundreds of hours at 425 5th Street, to stabilize the structure. That included the placement of tarps over the failing roof, but that temporary fix didn’t last very long.
The good news is that a $100,000 grant to help rebuild the roof is available from the Michigan State Historic Preservation office. The bad news is that $10,000 in matching local funds is needed to claim the grant, and the actual cost of tearing off the old roof and installing a new one will cost at least another $10,000 more. That includes new joists and decking.
The $10,000 local match must be raised by September 1.
The project is being led by Bring Back Calumet, which hopes to reclaim historic buildings that are deteriorating. 425 5th Street was built in 1895, and is currently owned by the Houghton County Land Bank.
If it can be stabilized, it could be sold to a developer for use as retail or residential space.
