UPDATE POSTED AUGUST 14TH: The Houghton County Sheriff’s Department has revealed that the 12-year-old boy who was originally believed to have been airlifted to the University of Michigan Children’s Hospital while still alive, actually succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the airport. Officials say he was from Commerce, Michigan. His name is not being released, because of his age.

Four people were saved from drowning yesterday afternoon off Big Traverse Beach in Schoolcraft Township.
Houghton County Sheriff’s Deputies report that an eight-year-old girl was swept into Lake Superior by a strong current. Three people who tried to save her were also overtaken by the current.
Several more observers used inflatable devices to reach the struggling swimmers, and bring them to shore.
A 12-year-old boy from downstate was taken to the emergency room at Aspirus Keweenaw. He was later airlifted to the University of Michigan Children’s Hospital. His condition is not known.
