Former Evangel Building to House Apartments

The soon-to-be former Evangel Baptist Church building on College Avenue will be converted into apartments.

Developer Derek Bradway has purchased the property. He has presented plans to the city of Houghton to renovate it, add a second level to a portion of the structure, and create 40 small efficiency units.

At its meeting last night, the city council – on a 4-2 vote – approved a request for increased density on the site. Existing zoning would have allowed just 23 units. Bradway says he’ll be able to provide on-site parking for 36 vehicles, with four more spaces located on adjacent land.

The new development will be called Kataluma Apartments. Kataluma is a Greek word that translates as “inn” or “guest room.”

Evangel Baptist Church has purchased the former Shopko building, and plans to begin holding services there next month.
