Hancock residents may soon be eligible for flood insurance though the FEMA National Flood Insurance program.
City Manager Glenn Anderson said there were few areas in Houghton County where residents could have had insurance before this year’s floods, and most of residents were unaware that they could.
Hancock and the surrounding neighborhoods, among those hit hardest by the floods, were not among them, however.
The city council will need to adopt an ordinance so residents can take part in the program but once that process is complete, flood insurance will become available to those within the city who wish to buy it.
Details are expected to be available in the coming months.
